Opening and closing files

To translate files, you will have to open them first. From Project Home, click on the Translations icon. When the file list appears, double click on the document you would like to translate. If you already have it open, click on the tab that displays the document name in question (above the file list). To close the file, click on the 'X' in the top right-hand corner.

Translating

The original segments are in the left-hand column and the translated segments are in the right-hand column. If you prefer to work with the original above the translation rather than beside it, mark the View/Active Row/In the Middle (Horizontal) option and the segment to be translated will display mid-screen (the original on the top and the translation on the bottom). Here is a list of the most common operations that you will need while translating with MemoQ:

  • Validating segments. When you finish translating a segment, press Ctrl+Enter to send it to the translation memory and to move on to the following segment.
  • Joining and splitting segments. If segments are too divided, you can join them by pressing Ctrl+J. If you would like to split segments, place the cursor in the area you would like to split the segment and press Ctrl+T.
  • Using text within memories or glossaries. In the right-hand column (Translation results), there are segments that display the memory and that are similar to the segments you are translating (red), the terms in the glossary (blue) and sentence translations that the programme suggests using text that is in databases (purple). To insert any of these options in the translation text box, simply press Ctrl+number (the option number that you would like to include in the translation). In the lower right-hand section, you will see the similarity percentage of the segment you are translating when compared to the segment that is entered in the translation memory.
  • Browsing memories. To search for a specific term in the memory, highlight the term and press Ctrl+K. A screen will appear displaying the search results. If an expression appears several times in the memory, the programme will display it in the right-hand column and will mark it with a mustard colour. If you double click, the term will be inserted into the translation segment.
  • Browsing term bases. To search for a term in the glossary assigned to the project, highlight the term and press Ctrl+P.
